New Interior Secretary held in contempt
[link|http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/09/17/national/main522256.shtml|What is it with this department?]

Excerpt:

(CBS) Accusing the Interior Department of setting the gold standard for mismanagement, a federal judge Tuesday said he was holding Interior Secretary Gale Norton in contempt, reports CBS News Correspondent Stephanie Lambidakis.

Norton, like her predecessor Bruce Babbitt, is under orders to add up the billions of dollars Native Americans are owed for land held in trust and to fix the trust fund program.

But U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth said little had been done in the three years since the Interior Department was told to clean up the program. And he said his lifetime tenure may not be long enough to get the trust fund on track.

Lamberth called the department's handling of the Indian money and the action of government attorneys in the case disgraceful, noting that he has the authority to take management of the funds away from the department.

Norton is the third Cabinet officer that Lamberth has held in contempt over the trust fund. Babbitt and former President Clinton's treasury secretary, Robert Rubin, also were held in contempt on the case.

Everything's a mystery until you figure out how it works.
We are here to go!
The nihilists and the liars have buried truth alive in a shallow grave.
New For the optimists amongst us,
this signifies the checks & balances of the judiciary over the other two branches. Judiciary just might.. bring in an independent fiduciary. For the pessimists, it ever devolves to, how many legions has The Pope the Judiciary?

This may demonstrate for the nth time that - as with Microsoft's thus-far evasion of Any punishment, even following a guilty verdict - the umm character of an Administration determines not 'how the Law shall be obeyed' but IF the law shall have any effect whatsoever.

Welcome to the US Consumers Banana Republic, its Selected junta of Oil barons and the year 2002. Imagine for a mo.. donating your sacred trust, your personal honor, your life - in support of the USCBR, after that draft notice arrives.

..still there? There until the '60s live demonstrations VS Bull Connor's police dogs, fire hoses, night riders (We'll just skip the 442nd Regimental Combat Team's greetings on their return - still looking a bit Japanese and all).

Hmm, will anybody much.. march for the Indians tomorrow?
Or for The Constitution's survival, today?
New Until they get jailed, contempt charges are so much wordage
Jail the suckers for contempt of court and *then* let them try to weasel out of it. Unlike Enron or Tycco or other wanna be jailings, judges can seemingly impose contempt citations almost at will without a "get out of jail with a laughable bail" card.
The lawyers would mostly rather be what they are than get out of the way even if the cost was Hammerfall. - Jerry Pournelle
New Harumph!
Jail time for a member of a Repo administration!
