The [link|http://hotx.com/rb/|River Walk] is pretty neat. They've diverted part of the river through downtown and built walkways along it. Along the walkways are shops, restaurants, boat tours, etc. As an added bonus, [link|http://thealamo.org|The Alamo] is along side of the River Walk. While it won't concern you during the holidays, it's nice and cool along the River Walk during the summer :-)
While you're there, be on the lookout for [link|http://www.cowparade.net/|The Cow Parade]. Artists decorate up cows which are put on display all over town. It was in [link|http://houston.cowparade.net/cow/gallery|Houston](link to photos of the cows, lot of puny names such as [link|http://houston.cowparade.net/cow/detail/822/|Cowchip]) last year and was very neat. It'll be in San Antonio from November thru April 2003. Once over, the cows are auctioned off for charity.
