Texas questions
My wife wants to take a car ride to texas around xmas time. I havnt been in texas except for the houston airport since the mid 70's. I was thinking of the alamo (San Antonio) as the far end and driving back in a loop that would hit corpus and padre island. What touristy type places are out there? Of course I might get stuck in nawlins and never make it any further west :-) thanx, bill

San Antonio
[link|http://www.sanantoniocvb.com/|San Antonio Visitor's Guide]
The [link|http://hotx.com/rb/|River Walk] is pretty neat. They've diverted part of the river through downtown and built walkways along it. Along the walkways are shops, restaurants, boat tours, etc. As an added bonus, [link|http://thealamo.org|The Alamo] is along side of the River Walk. While it won't concern you during the holidays, it's nice and cool along the River Walk during the summer :-)
While you're there, be on the lookout for [link|http://www.cowparade.net/|The Cow Parade]. Artists decorate up cows which are put on display all over town. It was in [link|http://houston.cowparade.net/cow/gallery|Houston](link to photos of the cows, lot of puny names such as [link|http://houston.cowparade.net/cow/detail/822/|Cowchip]) last year and was very neat. It'll be in San Antonio from November thru April 2003. Once over, the cows are auctioned off for charity.

[link|http://www.texasstateaquarium.org|Texas State Aquarium] - haven't been, but heard it's nice.
[link|http://www.usslexington.com/|USS Lexington] is beached near downtown and has been turned into a musem. You can go through a lot of the ship, check out some planes, and such. My nephew greatly enjoyed this a few years ago.

Houston
[link|http://www.houston-guide.com/|Houston's Visitors Guide]
[link|http://www.kemahboardwalk.com/|Kemah Boardwalk] - nice place to bring your family. A few rides, boat tours, good food and entertainment. I highly recommend eating at the Aquarium, the food is excellent. It's decorated to look as if you're underwater. Has a huge(50,000 gallon) salt-water aquarium in the middle and a few smaller(though still big) aquariums around the restaurant.
Go ice skating at [link|http://www.galleriahouston.com|The Galleria](huge mall in uptown).

Kemah Boardwalk
I lived in Kemah while the boardwalk area was being renovated. It was a great place to take the kids until it got so popular. The Aquarium was so popular after opening, the wait was 2 hours plus for a year. The food is pretty good, but you pay for the atmosphere. Highly recommended at least once.
Personally, my favorite place to visit along I-10 (or kinda close to it) was Austin. The downtown clubs always had incredible live music for any musical taste - jazz, blues, rock, country, alternative, or whatever. I always had a great time in Austin.

Galveston
[link|http://www.galveston.com/visitorcenter/|Galveston Visitors Guide]
[link|http://www.moodygardens.com|Moody Gardens] - very neat place. Has a tropical rainforest in a glass pyramid, complete with birds, fishand butterflies. 3D-Imax, Imax ride(fun). And an interactive science museum. I like to bring people here.
Depending on when you're here, [link|http://www.dickensonthestrand.org/|Dickens on The Strand] could be fun. [link|http://galveston-online.com/strand/|The Strand] is the historical downtown Galveston. It's been made touristy with lots of interesting shops. One of my faves is the candy store(don't recall the name) that has a soda fountain in it. I normally get a cherry phosphate then watch them make candy using early 1900's machines. [link|http://www.lsfm.org/|Lone Star Flight Museum] is next door to Moody Gardens.
I broke the suggestions into seperate posts so others could add more suggestions for each city and they'd be grouped when you check them out.

Of all the things I miss about Texas, not one compares to the withdrawls of no longer having access to Blue Bell ice cream. O, how I miss it. . .

San Antonio / Corpus / South Padre
BTW Bill,
Corpus Cristi and South Padre are several hours more drive from San Antonio, just so you know. And IHMO, the beaches in Texas don't hold a candle to those in Florida, so I don't know if you'll think it's worth the drive or not.
If you love visiting beaches, then please take the time, but they won't hold a candle to Naples or the keys.
