Welcome to IWETHEY!

New XP SP1, also 2K/NT
Ran around last night updating a bunch of the office systems, though I had to give a few the pass when the D/Ls would have kept me here well past midnight.

The SP itself ranges in size, but it's on the order of 30MB. I'm seeing D/L times of up to 100 - 180 minutes. The installation itself after this point also takes considerable time. Schedule plenty of time for this one.

Anyone know ways of automating (at least parts of) this crap? Doing laps around the office, selecting dialogs, booting boxes, etc., got way old, fast.

The full download is 130MB.

Note that it also updates IE6 to SP1.

Heh heh, just set up a login script to run the update like this:

p:\\software\\updates\\xpsp1_en_86x.exe -q -u

Don't run anything else while it does it's update in the background. Download the 130M monster first and place it on a network path. W00t!

Well I hate to say this.... but a good SQUID caching server with maximum object size raised considerably... would have made it VERY quick and painless... Especially if you did them all at the same time.... or somewhere close... I have been using squid at the College for a long time now. It makes "Windows Update" Fly... literally. sometimes 20MB D/Ls (notably the .NET update for W2K) be done downloading in about 8 seconds. Another 8 minutes to install and you were able to "reboot and apply more" updates... again lightning fast.. once the first one was done.

Plus, you could have just D/L'd the full SP and made a location to just "click" and get the files....

Then run the updates from there...

Dunno. Your call obviously.

But then again, you don't have a large, fast SQUID cache-store (U160 SCSI 4 Channel) with 1.4GB of Ram to spare do you now? *GRIN*
