New Anyone know the real story on this?
The following two stories strike me as fascinating because I just know that something has to be going on, but nobody seems to be talking about it.

First of all we have this [link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/26944.html|unexplained tidbit]. Apparently something tweaked the interest of the FTC, they investigated, and are forcing Microsoft Wallet to be shut down. WTF did Microsoft screw up so badly that the FTC got in the way of their World Domination and got Microsoft to meekly accept egg smeared on face? And why has nobody apparently noticed that this is an interesting event that is worthy of some hard questions?

And then we have this [link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/26972.html|puzzler].

Let me get this straight. This is the vulnerability that Microsoft was saying might not even be an actual security hole? The one which KDE patched in an hour? WTF happened to cause them to do a complete about face and label it critical? And if it is just this simple bug, why couldn't they get all platforms together in the several weeks that they claim to have been working on it?

I don't buy it. Doesn't wash. Something other than my feet stinks to high heaven around here. The timing makes me suspect that the two stories are connected. Perhaps the critical bug is the one they aren't talking about being in the patch?

I am reaching here, does anyone else have any ideas what is going on and why we aren't hearing more about this little FTC intervention?

Cheers,
Ben

New oooh nasty
wan to bet that some suit with clout got clouted? Breakins happen all the time, we just dont hear about it much. I would bet that when pressed there was a humongoid hole that allowed a wholsale breach of the databases, not just a few stray packets. Perhaps it was redirected then stored and forwarded with the original packaging. That would cause a shutdown of this magnitude,

New That is odd..
...but then again...MS may have dropped it because they didn't want to make waves and wake up the idiots at Justice who are letting them get away with corporate murder.

Nice to know, though...that I had no worries...even on the Windows machines...since I browse with Mozilla or Galeon exclusively and all email is Evolution.

Xwin is fun...there's some odd satisfaction I get from running Galeon on a Windows box.

New Don't know if I know the real story either . . .
. . but it was my impression from hints I've read that the FTC caught Microsoft pilfering information from Pasport Express Purchase that was forbidden by passport security / privacy terms. They appear to be removing that information to a place where they can pilfer it under different terms.

Such pilfering also makes potential "partners" uncomfortable, and with Passport the core of their .NET strategy, the impression of "irregularities" is serious stuff. Better to move the most obvious pilfering to another location.

I have no hint so far that the certificates fiasco is involved with this, but I could be wrong.

New Did anyone sane expect them to do otherwise?

New Oh... you suck man...
I'd be a betting man... that they ARE indeed connected...

I am sure other things will come out of this....

I don't believe we have a clue as to how big this will get...

And no... I don't believe we'll ever find out how big it really was/is!

New Don't I just?
But when I see things that don't make sense, my interest is piqued. And well I know the story, but still...

Miaow!

New Why I love the Reg
Of course there was always a simple workaround: Windows users could have used Mozilla for both e-mail and browsing, and simply not been troubled. For its part, MS seems not to have appreciated the the elegance of this solution.
Why can't more coverage read like this?
