good background on radical islamism
[link|http://www.hanitzotz.com/challenge/70/afghan.html|link well anotated] "For the jihad, then, things did not go so well here as they had in Bosnia and Kosovo. Extremist Islam failed elsewhere as well. In May 1999, Pakistan's army worked together with the Taliban and Bin Laden's jihad fighters in a joint attack on the province of Kashmir in India. It ended in dismal defeat. On all fronts, then, Osama Bin Laden's jihad fighters lost ground. The attacks on America occurred after their movement had reached a dead end. They hoped to recoup prestige by a sensational action. It would catalyze the necessary confrontation with the Infidels. At its end, they believed, would come Redemption. "
Well backgrounded but totally disagree with the conclusions. thanx, bill

"The poor of the earth"?
Near the end of the article, which (although yes it does analyze things) attempts to excuse them, ahem excuse me, but the hijacker/bombers/terrorists were not poor.

Re: IIRC - they all came from well off familes
I believe you are right - what I think the author might have been trying to get across was that they originally came from historically poorer tribes near the Saudi-Yemen border (as did OBL's poppa).
But I think you are quite right in pointing out that the 9/11 human bullets were all from middle-class families & were all well educated.

And a one-sentence summary:
Society lacks, at present, the will to heal the gravest illness humanity has ever known: the epidemic of poverty. This is not a poverty caused by overpopulation, drought or famine. It is a poverty resulting from an unbounded drive to profit at the expense of others. QED.
Brilliant.. if obvious.

Strength is not using force
and having the lesser beings whine and gnash their teeth as they do what they are told. Ocassional massive vicious chaotic destruction is needed to enforce the fact that you are strong. Force used on a regular basis teaches a lack of respect and fear from the forcee's as they learn they CAN endure a whuppin and keep on coming. Viet Nam, Algeria, Afghanistan Chicoms all prove that. thanx, bill

The point is either crush them or move them but reality is that Israel will have to pull back to the 67 borders and silently suffer a massive bloodletting in the following attacks as the vioence increases as they smell a total victory with all israel in their grasp then push them all over the jordan river and accross the suez. After that the problem will be "what palestinians" thanx, bill

Sad part is I and the Pals I know around here would settle
for a pull back so both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel would be contiguous with defensible borders and a free trade agreement with each other and the neighbors. It is the hardliners on both BOTH sides that want a blood bath for selfish unacheivable goals. ALL of the PA leadership has stated that Olso was just a chance to get closer for more military action, agreement pullback attack somemore. Find a link to someone in the PA that doesnt agree to that and you will find a body killed for collaberation. Remember the free elections? And the comments in the PA press that if you run against Arafat you will be killed. At least Israel only locks up those in disagreement. thanx, bill OT got a offer on the house today, way low but will give me 3 months before I panic to find anther gig. Might come up to charlotte for a weekend and visit ya'll.

Re: Sad part is I and the Pals I know around here would sett
We both know that's the answer. If Sharon and the "settlers" and Hamas and other rabid Palestinian militants could be wiped out by the push of a button, I would push it. These are the people that do not see a middle ground and have quite deliberately polarized the rest.
As is, death and destruction will continue with no end.

Re: OT: house and visit
Any offer is better than none. But, it sounds like someone with money and some time looking to make a quick buck if you are at all desperate. A vulture, if you will. :)
It would be good to see you again. My wife and I are not planning any trips any time soon, but my son and his lady friend are coming in a couple of weekends. Keep me posted on your plans.
