Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Verrrry Interesting . . .
The front page of my Web site has a counter that keeps statistics (for that page only). I hadn't looked at those stats for almost a year (I now have exhaustive stats for every page from my ISP).

For my site in August, Internet Explorer (all versions) has fallen back to 63% from about 72% and rising last time I looked.

August OS hits showed Linux has come up from next to nothing and makes a significant showing at about 8% (2554 hits). It's now way above Macintosh and twice Windows95 (but half Windows NT). Windows XP comes in at 1% (379 hits) just below Unix. Windows Me has a shocking 5 hits, tied with WebTV and well below Windows 3.1 (194 hits) but above Amiga (3 hits).

My site would be counting a more sophisticated crowd, so I went to the counter's global stats which reflect the general browsing public (271 million hits / month).

Back in January IE had a 91% share. In August it's 92%. The rest is pretty much all Netscape (all versions).

Here Windows Me is doing better, rising from 2% in January to 11% in August, enough to put it into the top 3.

Now, Here's the Shocker

In January Windows XP was about twice OS/2 and way below Unix (all in the low 0% range) WebTV was just above Linux in the mid 0% range.

in August Windows XP is still little more than twice OS/2 and way below Unix in the low 0% range.
I can only interpret this as an unprecedented disaster for Microsoft. Their XP sales figures have got to be lies.

In other news, Linux has traded places with WebTV and is now pushing toward Windows 3.1 in the mid 0% range.

New Hi Andy!
Just hit your site with Moz1.1 under W2K (**blush**)

HTH!

New I claim one of those WinMe hits. :(
Upgrading from the original Win95 with no USB and 16-bit FAT, it was bad enough to give Gates $90. I am not going to give him more if I can help it.

New I can claim another.
I still have WinMe on my laptop.

Wade.

"Ah. One of the difficult questions."

New I got rid of it.
I finally got fed up enough to reload my crappy little laptop (P200, 48mb RAM) back down to Win98SE - the last Win9x series OS I'll ever run. When I bought it, it already had ME on it, but I didn't have a NIC for it, so I didn't want to bother redoing it. Bought a cheap PC Card NIC, tossed ME, and it's running about 2x fast.

By the way - disable System Restore to free up about 1gb of memory and double the speed of your ME machine. The 2x figure I quoted, though, was how much faster 98SE was over ME after undoing System Restore.

ME - the only Microsoft OS disparaged by hardcore Microsofties.
End of world rescheduled for day after tomorrow. Something should probably be done. Please advise.
New Get to join you anon
in about a week - as 'we' nuke that POS on a large Dell. Can you imagine.. a "over $2K retail" Dimension 8100 machine, with otherwise beaucoup hardware, RAM etc. being delivered:

in Make Everything Look Like a Web-Page mode! and with Win MErde on it ?? Dell is beneath no-class and well down into.. slime-mold. But we knew that.

We shall have to suffer through the intentionally obtuse New Menus, necessary task disabling and general "site-map" of W2K/NT5.. that now also dinosaur hoped-for World Domination by creeping AD-conversion of Just Everyone\ufffd WHICH FAILED MISERABLY to coerce any but - the terminally deserving! of all which AD represents <<

(We'd have gone 98SE-lite, but - she wants to use an intensive video editing suite; 2K Does seem more 'M$-grade stable' once configured, so WTF...)
Nope, the suite don't come on Open-OS. Yet. Autodesk (!)

{sigh} And youse guys gotta do this crap every day, just to eat! :( My sincere condolences. Again. Anyway.. the hassle is worth it for the satisfaction of looking at that bundle of crapware + your mentioned Sys Restore + the spyware hooks, all-at-once.. cackling.. THEN typing

fdisk <cr>

Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle.. Cackle..
New disable System Restore? Pray tell how?
Alex

New Easy, I do it on every Me system I have to leave Me on.
Go to Control Panel / System / Performance / Filesystem. Note the check box to disable System Restore. Improves performance and stability considerably.

New Thanks! Done!

New Now you can delete . . .
. . the _Recover directory structure. This is usually small, but I encountered one case where it contained 86,000 files, and a virus checker took 3/4 hours to get through it.

New Mine is 2 MB.
Alex

New It cleans up a lotta stuff when you turn it off.
Prior to turning it off, that folder was 1 *GB* in size on my machine. After I turned it off, it was about 100mb.

New _Recover or _Restore?
I have the latter. It's currently 4Mb and I haven't touched it.

I have, though, turned off System Restore, as per your instructions. I think the PC boots a little faster, but I'm not sure I can tell. Nothing else has changed, but then, it has never been crashy, anyway.

Wade.

"Ah. One of the difficult questions."

New Yes, I should go do that. Thanks!

"Ah. One of the difficult questions."

New Crappy laptop?
With Win ME, isn't that synonymous?

More seriously, I got myself (justifying, it wouldn't stand up on an expense report) a Toshiba. Graphics (can you spell SOF 2?) Damn, it's heavy. Damn it's worth it. I'm trying not to damage the keyboard by drooling too much.

Came with XP, nowdays that's an "of course" item. sigh.
