One request
While I like your general approach to linking rather than quoting, at least tell us (or, with a minor extract) what the hell is so desirable about the link that someone like me won't instantly click "ignore posts".
Note. I did not follow that link. Might be fascinating as hell, but I can waste my time on many other things.

Seconded
Boxley's already on my "only in a very weak moment" list, for both this practice and horses corpses. Enough's enough, and there's more than enough real stuff to do.

on posters posting
I will post a link about sex, social discourse, politics, or something that caught my eye. If you have followed my links in the past and have been dissapointed by all means put me on your ignore posts lists. When I have something that I feel will be of a high benefit of general discussion I will preface with an All please review call and a link as well as some comments. The foregoing was a sexual type link as mentioned in the subject line. Follow or not read or ignore, that is the nature of a community? thanx, bill

Sorry, Bill, but that's bull.
Bill tries to wiggle: I will post a link about sex, social discourse, politics, or something that caught my eye. Yeah; they can be about pretty much anything -- but you *call* them ALL "link" or "Earl" or something equally non-descriptive! What, can't you just *admit* that that's *stupid*?!? When I have something that I feel will be of a high benefit of general discussion Yeah, well, it's all very nice and good that *you* feel it "will be of a high benefit of general discussion" -- but what the fuck is so wrong with giving *us* the chance to judge that *for ourselves*? I will preface with an All please review call and a link as well as some comments. That doesn't really quite parse as an English sentence, but the bits I can almost make out don't actually ring any bells. When did you last write any "some comments"? The foregoing was a sexual type link as mentioned in the subject line. Nope -- this is ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT. The subject line says NOTHING about it being "a sexual type link"; it talks only about unorthodox methods of strangulation. Follow or not read or ignore, that is the nature of a community? Oh -- so it's necessary, because this is a community, to NOT SAY anything about WHAT we have the option to "[f]ollow or not[,] read or ignore"? How the fuck does that work? Do those of us who post *descriptive* links somehow make this LESS of a community, or what the fucking fuck is it you're saying??? [Note: Yes, logically that _I_S_ *exactly* what you are saying. Isn't it *obvious* that it is not true?]

Heh, I'll take issue with a couple of things
"Yeah; they can be about pretty much anything -- but you *call* them ALL "link" or "Earl" or something equally non-descriptive! What, can't you just *admit* that that's *stupid*?!?"
Well if you remember I started doing that at YOUR request, prior to that I would just cut and paste the link so someone following would know where they are being led.
"That doesn't really quite parse as an English sentence, but the bits I can almost make out don't actually ring any bells. When did you last write any "some comments"?" [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=49932|http://z.iwethey.or...tentid=49932] because I thought this article would have a higher general interest level than my drive by post. Knowing that "some" folks do drive by a lot of my stuff I worded it more carefully and accurately.
"Nope -- this is ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT. The subject line says NOTHING about it being "a sexual type link"; it talks only about unorthodox methods of strangulation" That is a standard line used by several American comedians speaking about oral sex. Perhaps I forget that some of the stuff I listen to is arcane. First time I heard it was one of the muppets using it on Miss Piggy and when she actually saw it she went "thats not a monster? Thats a wee wee.
"Oh -- so it's necessary, because this is a community, to NOT SAY anything about WHAT we have the option to "[f]ollow or not[,] read or ignore"? How the fuck does that work? Do those of us who post *descriptive* links somehow make this LESS of a community, or what the fucking fuck is it you're saying???" My apologies, I thought the issue was not enough clues in the fucking fuck post, not not enough enough clues in the fucking fucking link. :) anything else I can help you with today? ]:-> thanx, bill

How am I so different? I don't exactly write essays about my links, do I?

Stupid answer
ObNeilsen: [link|http://www.useit.com/alertbox/980906.html|Microcontent]. It's sufficient. "Link" is meaningless redundancy -- formatting reveals it. Inform us. 40-60 characters is Jakob's suggestion. This post is 197 characters, 26 words.

Okay...yer starting to scare me...
I understand your point. This post is 197 characters, 26 words.
This scares me....I have visions of you counting every character. (I could deal with that.) But something tells me you didn't....that you either had (or wrote) a perl script specifically to count the number of characters in that post. (Twitch)

What I assumed...
is that he just used wc.
But he couldn't have, because he got the count of letters wrong Cutting and pasting his text I get 191. If I view source to include the link I get 253?
Ah, got it. He just included the text without the link and he included the 6 double-spaces (omitted in HTML) after periods that he types by habit. I have the same habit, even though it is a useless thing to do in a web environment.
Cheers, Ben

All that it means...
Is that Karsten and I have spent too much time grepping through logs. You tend to do that with grep foo biglog | grep -v bar | grep -v baz | ... ever lengthening the chain, with occasional iterations with wc at the end to see how much farther you have to go to filter it down to a reasonable output to handle manually.
shrug Ben
PS How much longer will we keep up the ... in the title? :-)

Nod
Usually I'm doing wc -l rather than straight wc's. (I forgot the basic nature of wc).
Still...while it would be possible to grab the post and work with it (either via cut and paste or other means), and then cat the file, I think it was technical analysis of the number of characters and correction of counts.
I can whip up Perl scripts and the like but generally take a more relaxed approach when posting here. I don't count the character when I write something up. I really try not to think about characters in HTML. :-)
PS: Ah, we can let the ... drop now I guess. :-)

...nailed...
cat <<EOF | wc -l paste text, excluding URL, as typed, with additional spaces after periods (so sue me, I learned how to type proper style) EOF ...which produces the result. That was the easy part. Harder was tightening it down from ~40 words ~300 chars originally.
