New BFD
This is going to be like the advent of UHF channels.

When UHF use became common (channels above 13), I recall we had to buy a little box that let us receive the UHF channels (which was a big deal since Sgt Sacto, the good cartoons and 3 stooges were on channel 50 in the Detroit area). Oh well.

I'm all for the transition. Current TV resolution sucks eggs.

I am out of the country for the duration of the Bush administration.

New BFD indeed:__ for those not living in city-hives.
Let the toys flow; it's what we do to kill the time. But not at the expense of mandatory cable, extremely costly (as a % of 'income') changeover for the almost unfunded "Public" Broadcasting non-commercial service + loss of all small stations not quite amalgamated into diminishing numbers of Corps.

Say goodbye also to any community lo-power broadcasting, as one-size fits all. It will remove (in my case) several programs I can get only off-air from San Jose.. or Sacramento; these are not syndicated - and are paid for by local subscribers.

Tell me about off-air digital transmitter signal-strength radii.

Nope, my vote cancels yours. It remains just to find how most effectively to fight this arbitrary next big homogenization of what can be seen at all.

Ashton
country VS city - again.
New Not exactly
When UHF became common, your existing channels didn't stop working.

With this one it will. Hopefully causing many of the people without money for a new electronic pacifier to consider going without...nah. I can't even believe that long enough to dream.

Cheers,
Ben

New Yeah but converters will be cheap
Honest - every nickel and dime hardware hacker will be selling receiver/converters out of his garage.

Just like the UHF receivers. Or as tony pointed out - the region code hacks for DVD players.

Plus, I'm sort of with you in hoping that maybe a bunch of people will simply give up on the thing entirely.

New Sooner the Better
In Atlanta, Ted Turner, inheritor of a marginally successful billboard business, bought a failing UHF TV station and - gasp! - had 24 hr. programming, mostly go-go girls gyrating in front of a psychedelic background to the sounds of pop music (Creedence, Stones, Motown...). The program was called "Now Explosion on Super 17". That TV station eventually became WTBS, the first nationally broadcast local station, and the foundation of what became CNN. In the 70s, around the time of SNL and at the advent of widespread cable installation, a guy named Bill Tush would give the news between old movies in the middle of the night, sometimes wearing a fedora with a "PRESS" card under the hatband, frequently with a shades-wearing dog seated next to him.

Ah Ted - capitalism at its hardworking best.
