You really want your medium of exchange to be constantly devaluing, but slowly.
Devaluing you ask?
Why of course! Because if it is increasing in value then your medium of exchange starts to become a plausible investment, which gets in the way of exchanging it.
OK, so why slowly?
Well to be useful as a medium of exchange, its value has to be sticky enough that people keep a decent sense of what various amounts of money mean in real terms.
