New Re: The description may be dated but...
Yes I'm well aware of the funky interface, but my people have no habits to unlearn. I want a central document management system. This company is going to be a model example of how to make systems work for small businesses.

New Central Document Management System?
Are you talking about a way to store documents in a database and search them?

[link|http://www.hummingbird.com/|[link|http://www.hummingbird.com/|http://www.hummingbird.com/]] They used to have a product named DocsOpen that allowed integration with MS-Word, Excel, etc that kept the versions of the documents and kept copies of the older ones in a database that was searchable. They renamed the thing and I forgot what the new name was.

You could always try to build one in Linux, copy the document file to a network location and point the database to it and give each file a unique name. Code it by keywords, client and matter numbers, etc.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.
New Wiki
...in general.

Specifically, [link|http://www.twiki.org/|TWiki], which offers a number of features not found in other Wiki implementations.

Though the primary interface is HTML based, you can attach (though not index directly) binary document formats. Collaborative documentation is a particular strength, though there are also options to apply access control (both modify and read).

I'm using this both at work, and at [link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/|TWikIWeThey].

What specific features are you looking for?

New Re: Wiki
Collaboration is not a main requirement - synchronized organization of inventory, accounting, and sales is. We rely on several suppliers and they also generate a lot of paperwork for us. Eventually I want things like quotes, bids, and all that are so automated that my sales people can just go their computers and pull up the important information. You can't believe how much people rely on memory and vast paper trails at a small company.

New Might still be a fit, or a place
There's some topical overlap between Notes and TWiki. I've been following a few topics on the main [link|http://twiki.org|TWiki.org] site, particularely:
  • [link|http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Codev/SubmitTopicByEmail|SubmitTopicByEmail]
  • [link|http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Codev/PriceTag|PriceTag], which lists similar proprietary projects.
  • [link|http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?LotusNotes|Wiki:LotusNotes], a brief description of LN.
  • [link|http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Codev/PlasticAndEverything2vsTWiki|PlasticAndEverything2vsTWiki], comparison of other online discussion software.
  • [link|http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Codev/WorkFlow|WorkFlow], which addresses, er, work flow in TWiki. Discussion but no implementation. My question is whether this discussion addresses your interests.

There are also some implementations which are pulling content from databases (Oracle IIRC) listed on the TWiki.org site.

What doesn't appear to be there are actions or scripted workflows. Status tracking can be part of TWiki though. Others have used ticket tracking systems for similar work.

Knowing your needs would be helpful.
