HP hiding behind DMCA
[link|http://news.com.com/2100-1023-947325.html|Security warning draws DMCA threat] Invoking both the controversial 1998 DMCA and computer crime laws, HP has threatened to sue a team of researchers who publicized a vulnerability in the company's Tru64 Unix operating system. ... f HP files suit or persuades the federal government to prosecute, the company could set a precedent that stifles research into computer security flaws, a practice that frequently involves publishing code that demonstrates vulnerabilities. ... It is common to release "live" code that takes advantage of a security hole after notifying the company. In HP's case, SnoSoft says that information made public last year should have given the computer maker enough time to fix the problem. ... Robin Gross, an attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), predicted HP would be one of many companies striving for broad interpretations of the DMCA. "These are the kinds of letters that we can expect to see now that the DMCA has granted such broad powers to copyright holders," Gross said. "Any information that can bypass controls will trigger DMCA penalties.
"The DMCA is so broad in what it prohibits it does include preventing researchers from revealing security weaknesses in operating systems--even though that has nothing to do with protecting copyright." ... Finisterre said that while he wanted to resolve the dispute with HP, he resented receiving DMCA threats. "We are like the guys that found out that Firestone tires have issues on Ford explorers," he said. "It's not our fault your Explorer has crap tires. We just pointed it out. We should not get attacked for pointing out issues in someone\ufffds product nor for proving it is possible."
I wonder if there's something we could do to help spread the word about this - the Firestone tire analysis is definitely something that a non-techie could understand. In the process, maybe we could make others understand the problem with DMCA better? I think we all know a few people who forward everything they receive. Perhaps a construct an email and send it to them?!? Things to include - HP was notified last year about their security flaw
- The code example(as is common practice) was released this year
- Highlight use of DMCA in this case
- highlight other ways DMCA impacts the average person
- Security of car is important(your life could depend on it)
- imagine if Firestone could have hidden behind a law such as the DMCA
- Security of computer is important(what if somebody got ahold of all your banking info, medical info, etc)
- what to do?
- Boycott HP/Compaq
- Stop buying HP/Compaq computers
- If you have an HP printer, stop buying HP ink refills(they make a significant profit off these)
- Get involved in overturning DMCA(ie: government's been listening to Hollywood's $, not the voters voices)

Where to get inkjet refills?
Quote: "If you have an HP printer, stop buying HP ink refills(they make a significant profit off these)"
While I agree that it's a great way to hit them back in their pocketbook, aren't most inkjet printers these days designed to work ONLY with the manufacturer's brand of refill cartridge? I've given up on trying to find any retail store that carries quality replacement cartridges for my 932 made by somebody other than HP.

Refill kits
I've had mixed luck - good luck with black, bad luck with color. The color refill turned out to be very messy and it was very difficult to get one of the chambers full (the yellow died in only a couple of weeks). The black cartridges that I've filled worked pretty well. The only downside I saw was that it "dried up" much quicker (lasted ~half as long) than a new cartridge. But the economics still work out in your favor.
Okay, the above was a long-winded way of saying that I recommend refilling black. The color cartridges may be different. They weren't worth the hassle for me. YMMV.

I tried a refill kit
followed directions to the letter. Ended up with a black stain on my floor. Tried it again, didn't leak at first, so I put it into the 694C printer, then it leaked all over the inside of the printer. I'm lucky it didn't short anything out. I won't be buying a refill kit anytime soon.

Tried one once.
I only tried the black on my 560C. It was a fiddly process and I didn't go through that much ink for it to be worthwhile.
Next printer purchase was carefully selected on value-for-money of brand-name ink cartridges. Canon BJC-6000.

Recycled?
Companies such as [link|http://www.printer-ink-cartridge.com/|this] offer recycled (they list it as remanufactured) cartridges.
I've also used ink refills. Refills on my Cannon tanks work a couple times before I need new tanks. There's a sponge in the tank's outlet that would get too compressed to function after a few refills.

Personally I am planning to call Bruce Perens tomorrow
Should have done it today, but I got home, needed a nap, and then my wife wanted to do stuff.
His offer to take the call is [link|http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=37074&cid=3983655|here]. And I want to prove his claim that he won't get any calls wrong. :-)
Cheers, Ben

Good a place as any to try the new borrowed sig
Love that SNOSoft quote.

HP backs down, blames it on unruly lawyers

Excerpt:
4) Where and how the DMCA should be applied is a matter of great controversy. The reported letter to SnoSoft was not consistent or indicative of HP's policy. We can say emphatically that HP will not use the DMCA to stifle research or impede the flow of information that would benefit our customers and improve their system security.
