New Any recommendations for usenet archive?
But you can't recommend groups.google.com. The reason I'm asking this is because my company's (expletive deleted) corporate security department has decided to filter out (using SurfControl) ALL requests to groups.google.com.

I've been using this tool to find answers to technical questions (mostly the comp.* newsgroups) for at least 4 year now (since it was dejanews.com). I feel lost without it. I can often find the answer to my questions in a couple of minutes, and haven't found web searches to be nearly as productive.

It's going to be a bureaucratic uphill battle to get them to change/alter the policy.

Thanks in advance.
New Change Employers
If they are blocking out the whole site, then they are a bunch of idiots and morons, and you'll be better off working for someone else. I'll bet they blocked the whole site because it allows access to the alt.sex.* groups, and they are too stupid to know how to block that part of the site.

Of course if you do find a new usegroup archive, what is to stop them from blocking that as well?

Some Corps block Yahoo.com because it allows search access to adult sites. Also geocities.com, etc.

New Google Web Service API
You could write your own [link|http://www.google.com/apis/|Google Web Service] client, put it up on a site and access the groups that way. You would be limited to 1000 queries a day though. Also, I don't know if they provide the groups via the API.

D'oh! I guess not. From the FAQ:

2. Can Google APIs be used to access Google Groups? Image search? Directory search?

No. The Google Web APIs service can only be used to search Google's main index of 2 billion web pages.

New Interesting idea though.
Write your own 'API' using [link|http://sourceforge.net/projects/snoopy/|Snoopy] as a php-html-proxy... A useful thing, methinks. I'm going to look into adapting my 'mscompetes' joke page into doing this...

*chuckle*

Hey - [link|http://www.microsoft.com&item%3DBGates@www.imrics.net/mscompetes/index.php3?http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/gomscom.asp?target=/|the thing] might be useful after all!

New Start researching publicly available anonymous proxy servers
Your computer sends stuff to the proxy server which gets the stuff for you while generally hiding who you are, then it gives it back to you. So it will look like you're talking to a different site than your local firewall filter thinks.

New Which will work
until they figure out that it is a proxy being used to bypass their firewall filter, and they block the proxy address. They will figure this out when he visits the proxy address more than 25 times a day. If they are truly corp paranoids, they will have blocked most publically available proxy servers like those found on [link|http://www.astalavista.com|[link|http://www.astalavista.com|http://www.astalavista.com]]

P.S. Beware of the "Internet Use" policy. They may have a policy against using proxy servers to bypass their Firewall Filters. Most Brain-Damaged Corps have a moronic policy like that and breaking it can get you terminated.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.

New This might do it
A peer to peer http request forwarding gizmo being used to circumvent censors.

I bellied up to the sandbar, and he poured me the usual: Rusty Snail, hold the grunion, shaken, not stirred. With a peanut butter and jellyfish sandwich on the side - heavy on the mako.
