New Access autonumber skipping.

Couldn't find anything on this on the M$ web site. Any idears?

Just to let you know of a database problem that may or may not
come up again. Both Mel and Bev have had one episode of this
where they have had the entry database 'skip' an id number - ie.
patient number 18 was entered, then the next id number that the
database came up with was patient number 20.

I'm thinking maybe it's a result of accidentally double-clicking a button or something.

New just a couple first thoughts
1) Access won't re-use an ID. If someone used ID 19, then deleted it, then made a new one, it would be 20. You have to compact the DB to get #19 back, and that's only if you haven't already used #20, etc.

2) multiuser issues?

3) as you say, double-clicking ;)

New Re: just a couple first thoughts
It's single-user, so that's not the problem. I don't believe she knows how to delete records either. And I just tried activley double-clicking the 'New Entry' button and it doesn't do anything untowards.

Buggers.
New Transactions?
Don't know if you're using transactions, but a rollback of a transaction will not have the effect of rolling back the autonumbering.

For example, if the user started to enter a new row (either on purpose or accidentally) but then immediately hit undo or delete (etc...), the autonumber would have been incremented but not rolled back.
