If the design looks really dumb . .
. . and impossible to work with, I look for a trick. Sometimes really obvious tricks are very difficult to see unless you already know about them. Does something that looks like it doesn't come apart actually come apart?

Agreed. And check a tool shop like Techni-Tool
If it needs a special screwdriver, a place like Techni-tool should carry it.
I'd suspect there's a way to disassemble it with simple tools, but maybe it needs something like 103SC891 from [link|https://webvia.techni-tool.com/VIA5/index.jsp|Techni-tool]. (Search on 103SC891 - it's a special offset screwdriver.)
HTH. GL!
Cheers, Scott.

Re: Agreed. And check a tool shop like Techni-Tool
103SC891 is still to phat. As I said, I've got 0.75 inches to work with. My ratchet bits are far too long, and a chuck-head bit, cut, might work.
I'm looking to see if there aren't any Chinese Mystery Box trix on this case, but I don't see any. May break down and call the vendor (just realized that I know who it is in this case (no pun intended)), a true sign of desperation.

IF I really had only 3/4", here's what I'd do.
- I'd get a #2 phillips hexagonal bit for one of those screwdrivers that take replacable bits.
- I'd grind the sucker down from the but end far enough so it'd get into the space and insert into the screw head with enough clearance for the screw to back out. 3/8 inch should be enough.
- I'd get an end wrench sized correctly for the hex of the bit. Holding the bit into the screw with a flat blade screwdriver of some such tool, I'd turn her out with the end wrench.
- After getting it all apart, I'd notice what the trick was and feel real stupid.

Do you still have the books for the thing?
I can't quite believe no-one's said that yet...

Bad Vendor. Very Bad Vendor!
They should have at least provided even a leaflet about the actual box. The maker of the box would have. It also means I rather doubt you'd get much help from said vendor about How To Do what you've been asking.
Ah well. Perhaps you should just get out for 3/8" drill bit and drill some holes in the side above the screw holes. Then you'd be able to use an ordinary screwdriver. :-)

I'll second this.
I remember working in some Dell 1U boxes and the card cage actually comes straight out - if you know what bit of innocent metal to push in the right direction. The first time you figure it out, more comes out in your hand than you think should! But it works.
Compaq like this design sometimes, too.

This box is a market predictor
...the bottom falls out.
OK, actually it lifts out. The Mobo and a couple other bits are screwed onto the box bottom, with the odd side-mount screw. The whole thing skootches about 1/8 inch over, then lifts out. Or so it would appear, haven't tried that yet ;-)
