New That'll work in some cases
But what happens when you have an entire company whose judgement(s) are thrown into doubt? Arthur Andersen shredding Enron papers is one example; even if it *is* the actions of a couple of people and management and some peons "just following orders", it has put the entire company's practises into doubt. Definitely consulting for companies that they're supposed to be independantly auditing can't be good, even if the one hand supposedly doesn't know what the other hand is doing.
New Accenture?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Andersen divest itself from the consulting business, setting up Accenture as an independent entity? (I recall a nasty spat where the Accenture people wanted to retain the Andersen name - probably the best thing that they could have hope for was losing that fight given that the Andersen name is now worthless).

New Don't kill the entire company
(* Arthur Andersen shredding Enron papers is one example; even if it *is* the actions of a couple of people and management and some peons "just following orders", it has put the entire company's practises into doubt. *)

Then prosecute each and every one of them one-by-one.

(Although it is sticky if one will lose their job for "not being a team player" and disobeying bad orders, such as shreading.)

There has to be a better way than killing the entire company.

Remember, this would be a temporary situation to get the economy back on track.

And then fire congress for allowing H1B's during a tech downturn.

New Nuremburg deja vu
I was just following orders.. Same situation: refuse an order, get shot / Refuse an order, get fired.

"Can't legislate morality" -?- Oh yes you can.. but the irony ever is: you are then trying to cover all loopholes where there exists a fundamental dishonesty in the ones being 'governed': like most of bizness 2000.

I have no idea how mere legislation + the fact that the miniscule ratio of police/population is based upon the presumption that most.. are honest-enough -?- could reconcile.

(But I think Billy n'Bally deserve a large credit, in years to be incarcerated somewhere, for having served as the Examples for so many: who raced to behave.. just as creepily)

Hey.. Face It: We're [too fscking Many of us] Assholes.

New Put another way...
... those who don't want the legislated ethics or morality will find a way to obey the letter of the law whilst avoiding the spirit of the law.

Wade.

"Ah. One of the difficult questions."

New Think so..
Just as with selective... Bible (or Koran or..) reading. We be a Devious species. We 'read' what we find comfortable. A recipe for [?]

New I would have said 'selfish' rather than 'devious'.

New Nuremburg rock-and-hard-place
If you disobey orders, you are hung by your superiors. If obey orders and lose the war, then you are hung by the victors.

Morals or not, it is a sticky mess.

People have families to raise. It is hard to risk screwing your own family for the sake of high morals.

I am not necessarily justifying such, but Darwin tends to punish the high moral ground. I remember a PNR program on wistleblowers. Many of the callers who told stories were fired for not being a "team player". One medical technician told of a sloppy surgeon who covered up his bad work with lies and fraud. Ask to video-tape any operation you have.

I have been a peon under sleezbags who have asked me to help them sleezicate. I don't like to be in that situation one single bit, but there is often no easy exit. (It did not involve medical or safety risks, only money. What really pisses me off is that they had honest alternatives that appeared better from a success-standpoint than their dark plan to me.)
