At some point, Google rejected the official version because it needed permissions and did things Google no longer allowed. Someone then rolled a version that met Google's restrictions by removing functionality to get it back on the Play Store. That was done using the official package name and a higher version number. Cue mayhem...
The core team has been working to get both versions back in sync. Not sure yet how far along they've gotten. I switched to the F-Droid version as I did get hit by the upgrade to the crippled version.
