New So what happens when Cuba blows up?
Because the explosion is currently happening.

Too long didn't watch:

Cuba's been going through national blackouts for the last 3 weeks or so that have peaked into a total grid collapse.

They've got a 40-year-old electrical system built on cheap or free Soviet oil. When Soviet collapsed they got it from Venezuela. That's now gone. Right now they're getting a some from Mexico but not nearly enough.

They have not maintained any of their infrastructure. They pump the oil in and ran it for 40 years and it's falling apart. And there's not enough oil to feed it anyway.

Oil's the most expensive way to run an electrical infrastructure and it's all they have the possibility for.

So they've had a total grid collapse for the last week or so. There is no getting better in this situation. Only worse.

Who would pay for it? Where do you get the equipment and expertise?

So what's next?

Do we get Al Qaeda in Cuba? Or some variation?

Seems like they show up every time a government collapses.
New Another Haiti??
Dunno.

I'd worry more about refugees than terrorism.

Haiti is a continuing mess, with too little being done to try to return to something like stability.

Cuba is different vis-à-vis the USA because of the cold-war refugee history and all the rest, but it's hard to see the GQP deciding to open up the doorways and welcoming them in in large numbers.

As in far too many places in the world, governments in Cuba and Haiti invested far too little in improving the lives of people via infrastructure maintenance and improvements. (Part of that in Cuba was exacerbated by the trade embargo and all the rest. Haiti had major natural disasters on top of the political and economic issues.) Similarly, but differently, with Venezuela and lots of other places.

It's not clear to me that there's an easy solution to make things better, especially with DJT about to be back in the White House.

Peace and comfort to the innocents.

Best wishes,
Scott.
New Re: Another Haiti??
I think any successful approach to bringing Haiti back from its current situation will be adequately characterised by the word “draconian”.

I also think no-one with the resources has the will to do it. So the dreadful lawless status quo will persist.
