Yes, and ...
So anyway, it's going to be interesting to watch as the technology evolves over there and how many people die in the process. If we actually hear about it, of course. Most of it will be hidden when possible. Same way the current stats for how many people are killed by just plain shitty drivers are hidden by it being so common and expected that it barely makes the local news, much less national. It'll be interesting to see how those numbers change as the ratio of self-driven miles continues to climb.

Perverse incentives make for perverted outcomes.
the current stats for how many people are killed by just plain shitty drivers are hidden by it being so common and expected That means the best places to ram self-driving cars through are those where drivers suck the most, because there the machines' sucky driving won't be that much suckier -- or maybe even less sucky -- than current, human, drivers'. So when will Elon start lobbying for dismantling Driver's Ed in the US... Or has he already? (If so, it's probably on the sly, so would take some digging to find out.)

Google "parents' rights"
They present it as parents having a say in their kids' education. Pull the thread long enough and you find it's organized and funded by white supremacists. And the goal is the elimination of public school.
The number of private businesses set up to profit from this outcome is probably uncountable.

It's on the ballot here right now
And I knew immediately I was against it.
As far as I'm concerned, the primary usage is force schools to make sure the kid never has any privacy. They have to report that their kid is gay to the parents. The Bible thumpers who would be quite happy to beat the shit out of him/her every night for the next couple of years if they heard about this.
So I'm 100% against it from that perspective.

Ah, yes, they do driver's education in public school over there.
I probably knew that sometime, but it slipped my mind.
Yet another weird Americanism. In other countries -- where having a driver's license isn't mandatory -- private driving schools provide that education for a fee, if and when one decides to get a license.
Having it in public school is a typical example of the American cradle-to-grave nanny state. ;^>

That might be per-state
None of our local schools offer it, so we had to pay. Well, maybe technically we didn't have to but proving the training requirement without working through a licensed agency is a pain in the ass.

Homeschooled here
Both boys went to a private company, didn't manage to get the practice in afterwards, and ended up getting their licenses at 19-20 by having me teach them.
