New By way of comparision.
You should look into the statistics on how many people are injured on the 4th of July by fireworks.

Also, how many houses are burned down by fireworks.

Not to mention how many people are killed by drunk drivers.

Stupid is stupid. In any culture.

8000/year injured by fireworks: 50% are burns (just how hot a sparker is: >1000\ufffdF) Half these are children. Wasn't clear about the spread of 'seriousness', fatalities etc.

More-% than at Afghani weddings, births /year?

I fear we shall become jaded with fireworks soon (too) - as computer real-time control meets more and more accurate flight/burn times of precision explosives.. Imagine: a 20 minute choreographed musical performance + timed fireworks. (now old hat)

Maybe they will come to be just like a Big-screen digitally created cartoon.. with granularity such that:

can 1240 x 1024 resolution be far behind?
