New I got frogs
Or at least I will soon enough.

When I had my pond many years ago I added a few tadpoles that I bought and then I got a frog or two. The pond was right outside the boy's window. He hated those goddamn frogs. Croaking all night.

Now I have the pond. I let it fill with rain water over the winter. I let it stay dark and let stuff grow. I tossed some anti-mosquito tablets in though. I haven't yet created the filtration system but that's a week or two away. It just got gorgeous out. Time to work outside for fun.

We started hearing the frogs a week or two ago. Loud when outside but gentle inside.

Today I looked closely and realized there's probably thousands of tadpoles in the pond now. Wow.

I decided to feed them. I found out that tadpoles are vegetarian. I'm currently boiling a whole bunch of lettuce and veggies to toss in. A little at a time to start off with to make sure I don't overwhelm the ecological balance. I'll be adding a bunch of water plants and duckweed in a bit along with some aeration.

I love playing with my pond and generating frogs.
New Re: I got frogs
We have a pond that we originally set up for koi, but that did not work out very well. The frogs have always like it, so it is theirs now.

The population goes through a couple of phases each year. First up are the wood frogs. They'll be in the pond before the ice is completely gone, make a racket for a couple of days, cover all the plants in eggs, and then they disappear back into the woods. The pond has enough algae to sustain the tadpoles, so we don't really have to do anything to keep them going.

After the wood frogs, American toads usually come do their thing, but they have not so far this year.

Things then settle down and green frogs and the occasional bullfrog come and go over the summer.

We also have peepers in the neighborhood, but for some reason they do not use the pond.
New Of course not -- what the heck would a peeping Tom use a pond for?!?

Where there's frogs there's snakes.

I used to catch snakes for fun. I'd wander the woods and turn over rocks and when they moved I grabbed. I typically get bit a lot and s*** on a lot and not care. Sometimes. I'd keep them in a tank for a few days and they would calm down and they would be handled with no problem.

But I had to travel for those snakes. I never caught a snake near my house. I'd have to ride a bike for miles to get there. It was a joy to visit a friend's house by a stream.

M calls out from outside for me. You want to see a snake? Sure!

Note: I have the perfect wife. She goes to work but not too much. She took the cat to the vet this morning for an appointment. She actually enjoys cooking and playing with recipes and she does it well. She's out cutting the grass. And she finds snakes for me.

So I scamper down and review the snake that isn't moving. She: I hope I didn't hurt it. Uh oh.

I pick it up with stick and see the head is almost fully decapitated. Yep, you hurt it. Don't worry, it's probably one of a 100 in the local vicinity. After all we have lots of frogs to feed them.

She replies: that'll teach it to stay out of the tall grass. I respond:. But that's exactly where snakes are supposed to be, but then you turn it into short grass.

I love living on a property that contains snakes. Little itty bitty (foot long or so) garter snakes to start off with, we shall see what else.
