New It changed over time.
After about season 6, when Alan Alda became one of the executive producers, the tone changed and it became a lot cleverer (in a good way) and let the characters grow a lot more. Larry Linville (Frank Burns) actually left because his character had nowhere to go (and his contract expired).

I've seen most of the TV series and whilst I haven't seen the original movie, I have read the book - and it's really different in tone to the TV series. The book has dated fast, but the last few seasons of the TV show are much more timeless.

Wade.
New Go watch the movie
Much closer to the book and occasionally a bit depressing but well worth it.
