New stumped redhat 7.9 question
have a vm running rhel7.9 on vmware. cant login on console either as valid local user or root. get accessed denied message.
boot into single user. root password works fine.
mount / rw
check modes of password and shadow files. fine
verify pam.d/password-auth and system-auth against a known good server, fine
restorecon -R /etc few issues nothing in pam
check /etc/security/access.conf and limits.conf
nada
boot multiuser
root access denied on console
any ideas?

New alt sysadmin found a solution
/etc/security/limits.conf
had hard nofiles set too high
no idea why it was an issue
lowered it and logged in
