New Looking for a new laptop
My windows lapper finally gave up, and I need something to run a few apps without Linux versions. Most stressful thing will probably be light video editing, like what I did on a low end box 10 years ago - trimming scenes, adding captions, no compositing etc. So something that will handle full-screen high-def and output same on HDMI.

Budget is $500. I've seen some Surface tablets, and they've gotten good reviews, but there's so many models I can't tell which is best for what.

New RTINGS seems to do good reviews.
I bought a cheap 50" LG 4k TV that I'm using as a monitor based on their reviews.

https://www.rtings.com/laptop/reviews/best/by-price/under-500

They mention the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15 (scroll down, in the "business" category).

I have an older Lenovo ThinkBook 13s-IWL i5 that has been fine. I don't do any video editing, etc.

NotebookCheck.net is an excellent site for reviews as well. Especially for the displays. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Laptop-Buying-Guide-Tool.13212.0.html

HTH a little.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Thanks, been looking for another good review site besides Wirecutter

New Stay away from Clevo laptops
Often rebranded as other "boutique" makes.

Nasty keyboards and horrific BIOSes.
New Surface would be good.
If you don't need or want the tablet form factor, go for a Surface Laptop. They're also a little cheaper and slightly bigger than the same spec in the Surface Pro.

The Surface Books are the pricey, high-end versions (the detachable keyboard is a *dock*).

The Surface Go range is the opposite: they used to be ARM processors but the newest range use Intel's entry-level CPUs. They're also limited to the Windows Store unless you pay for a Windows upgrade.

Wade.
New There's what I needed
I kept seeing the Go models looking cheaper but couldn't figure out why. Of course they won't describe the store limitation clearly.

The tablet firm factor is kind of "nice to have" but I'm fine doing media consumption on my phone.
