New BoJo addresses the nation.
(Sound on, wait for it...)

DW.com has context:

The photo throws up fresh questions about the conduct of Johnson and his government, days after it emerged last week that his staff held an illegal Christmas party on December 18, 2020.

The British prime minister has faced a barrage of criticism and calls to quit, amid plummeting public support for his administration.

An Opinium poll published Saturday for the Observer newspaper, showed 57% of Brits think Johnson should now resign.

The same poll found support for his ruling Conservatives has fallen four points to 32%.

Backing for the opposition Labour Party has risen to 41%, its biggest lead since 2014.

His days are numbered. However, it seems unlikely that Labour will get the big chair quickly (presumably some other Tory will just replace him and try to argue that everything will be fine and better going forward) - at least if past is prologue.

Corrections welcome.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Labour can't force a GE on this matter (or at all, tbh)
The smart money is on one of the following taking the PM job, which won't be until well after Xmas, because of the timescales of the processes involved. It's all about who will lose the fewest seats at the next election.

Gove - the Pob-a-like who is one of Westminster's most Machiavellian schemers; some consider him to be the source of at least some of the current leaks.

Sunak - he looks good and sounds good and hasn't managed to put his foot in his gob to date. He has a couple of disadvantages: he's short, he's brown (the Tories are racist af, despite what they might say and do on the surface), and his wife is exceedingly rich (the Tories are just as capable of being envious as anyone else)

Truss - extremely popular with the Tory party membership. Despite being demonstrably thicker than a whale omelette, she has also avoided notable gaffes throughout the pandemic. The Tory Jeremy Corbyn - wildly popular in the club, not so much with the electorate.

Outsiders:

Hunt - another one who looks and sounds good. Viscerally hated by the employees of the NHS, though, and there's a lot of those. He's been sounding like the voice of reason lately, which is weird indeed if you've ever followed UK politics.

Javid - Bit of a nothingburger. Brown, so has that disadvantage, but hasn't noticeably fucked up lately, and he's also principled - he resigned rather than let Cummings choose his staff.

New Yes
New A considerable source of pressure...
...will be the "Red Wall" Tory MPs who took long-standing Labour seats in the North at the last election. These seats, some won with large but friable majorities, remain extremely vulnerable to large swings.

I expect the 1922 Committee will soon be hearing from several of these MPs, if not already.
New Thoughts on the North Shropshire results?
It certainly seems to have a lot of writers at The Guardian worked up. I will readily confess that prior to this week I couldn’t have picked Shropshire north or south out of a police lineup.

cordially,

New Wor Bozza is fucked now.
Well, he's gone from probably fucked to definitely fucked.
