New quite the depreciation gradient
My kid brother’s old flattop, the USS Kitty Hawk (“Kitty Litter” to the sailors), CV-63, was sold last week to a shipbreaker.

For a penny.

True, it was laid down late in the first Eisenhower administration and launched just under a year before the sib was born, but I imagine he’ll greet the news with a pang. I believe that at the time the ship was decommissioned in 2009 it was the last non-nuclear carrier in the fleet.

cordially,
New Kitty Hawk, NC is too small a town to set up a museum ship.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

-- Isaac Asimov
