New Giving up on DSL
At the turn of the century I switched from a “dial-up” modem to DSL. Zowie! It was like the orgasm scene from When Harry Met Sally. Fast forward two decades, and not so much. My DSL craps out pretty much every day, requiring the box to be unplugged for a minute and reignited. At other times, the connection slows to a crawl. Recently the attempt to access a 215MB PDF, which required fewer than thirty seconds on my wife’s cable link (this is, for tax purposes, a dedicated business connection), took twenty minutes on DSL.

I think I’m going to tell AT&T to go fuck itself. Of course, I’m going to have to go into San Francisco to do this, because the online barriers are well-neigh insuperable.

cordially,
New And do you use a horse and buggy to get around town? :)

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

New Ours isn't much better
We're supposed to have 100MB, but it regularly slows to a crawl making video calls for work choppy at best.

New I had DSLExtreme over AT&T lines . . .
. . and it worked quite well. One of my clients has AT&T DSL and they spent over a week without essential Internet service (couldn't clear credit cards) while incompetent AT&T techs tried to get it working.

I'm on Spectrum Business now (cable), but they're a couple blocks outside Spectrum service.

We had an outage here when AT&T's drop cable came down. I found you could not contact AT&T service on a Sunday, not even their robot. It took days for a tech to come out. Their robot doesn't take any information, so he was unprepared and had to wait for others. A Spectrum guy came out to have a look while they were stringing wire.

Spectrum got everything ready, but AT&T screwed up transferring phone numbers, more than twice, but we finally got it transferred a week and a half later. I have had one Spectrum service failure. It didn't come back up right away, so I did my grocery shopping and it was back by time I returned.

AT&T keeps calling me telling me about how much better their service is than Spectrum, and I just tell them "No freaking way in Hell".
New Wow...
If an ISP of any decent size here in AU was uncontactable during any sort of outage they would find their arse handed to them on a platter. Social media would be on fire, mainstream media would report on it and I daresay enterprising people would find the personal phone numbers of the CEO...

New and I thought I had it bad
CenturyLink in the sticks. Previous owner's Wi-Fi / internet setup while I'm waiting for CenturyLink to turn on mine.

T-Mobile out here is pretty worthless. I have to change my phone provider. But when I have internet local my phone will use the Wi-Fi so I don't give a s*** that much. Except for the CenturyLink just disappears for like 60 seconds at a time and everything spins.

Comcast Xfinity is not available here.

I could do satellite. Hughes would be happy to sell me what looks like a decent internet plan.

Since I'm currently using the homeowners internet and not my own I am not calling tech support yet. But when it's in my name I will call them and explain my issues. Maybe they will address them or maybe they won't and then I might have to go find another internet provider. With satellite you can always live anywhere and still get decent internet.
