It's not easy to get the details, but Facebook and our government have been talking and both have compromised. Facebook has begun un-blocking news Pages and talking to news outlets here about what content they want paying for*. The government's legislation has been amended so that Facebook has more agency in what they accept.

Of course, a lot of Aussies just don't get their news from Facebook. Meanwhile a lot of news outlets saw a precipitous drop in traffic.

* I suspect Facebook is going to spin up a "news" feed for this content largely separate from their Pages system. Of course, if they do this in such a way that actually sidelines content the news outlets are making them buy, there will be complaints. :-)
