Trans Texas Corridor
[link|http://www.dot.state.tx.us/ttc/ttc_home.htm|Crossroads of the Americas]
This looks very interesting. Revamping the road system to include separate sections for cars and trucks as well as 3 train systems(2 tracks for each, one in each direction): high-speed, freight and commuter.
I really like the idea of the trucks having their "own" freeway, especially since it looks like there will be 2 speed limits, 55 for trucks and 70 for cars.

Truck routes -- de facto
In a number of areas, there are de facto (and possibly legal, though by reg or statute I don't know) truck routes. Around the SF Bay Area, highways 101 and 880 are for trucks, 280 and 580 are the alternate "commute" routes. To the point that traffic alterts tell trucks when they can hit the otherwise prohibited routes.
Makes quite the difference for driving in a passenger vehicle as well -- I generally prefer not having a scad of trucks around.
Now, the worst truck route I've encountered is I-80/90/94 at the Indiana/Illinois state line. Uhuhgly.
There's also a route in SoCal near the Arizona line that's rumored to have 18 wheelers rolling at way high speeds -- 90+. So the speed split seems somewhat unlikely to me.

Speed split
would only be near the Houston and Dallas/Forth Worth areas due to pollution issues. I should have clarified that.

Separate routes - speed split OK
A dangerous things to have, though, is a speed split on a regular highway. Speed doesn't kill - speed differentials combined with various driver mistakes/stupidities kill.

It's a mix of law + tradition
Trucks are legal on I-280, but on the Pennisula have generally used US 101 instead, probably because it's more convenient for most trucks (closer to most businesses). Of course, I-280 also goes by downtown San Jose and becomes I-680, but even there I don't recall see a particulary large number of trucks, unlike I-880.
On I-580 from about Hayward to somewhere in Oakland, trucks are illegal, but from Hayward to I-5 trucks are, well, extremely common on I-580.
There are other metros areas with restrictions on trucks and non-carpool vehicles, the most extreme I can recall is I-66 in Virginia goes all HOV (yep, all lanes) during rush hour once it reaches the beltway.

Jersey turnpike
has separate sections for trucks and cars for about 60 miles.
Truck story:
My brother used to have a VW bus, very light, with a very large wind profile.
He'd tailgate a truck SO CLOSE ...
"How close was it!?"
That the driver could not see him. We'd be between 3 and 6 feet away, continously.
The truck would suck us along.
I think we made it from S. Jersey to Saratoga Springs NY (where my sister went to college) on about 2 dollars of gas.
Add to the fact we spent the gas savings on weed and PCP, it's amazing we survived.

PCP? Tell me you didn't roll it in with the weed... And still drove...
If you did, my praise for your reflexes!

Nah
Not while driving. Weed yes, PCP not.
Mostly.
One time we got caught in an ice storm, coming home, just before dawn.
PCPed out of our mind.
There were multiple days worth of accumulated packed ice on the road (suburban development).
The heater was broken, we tried to use a little propane heater but it didn't really work, was too cold.
The van windshied was FILTHY.
And the sun rose, hit the filthy windshield, and turned it opaque.
That was a close call, since I think we drove for another 20 seconds before we realized we were blind.
