Historian Larry Tye joins Fresh Air. His new book is “Demagogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator McCarthy.” Tye had access to McCarthy’s personal and professional papers, medical and military records, and recently unsealed transcripts of his closed-door Congressional hearings. Tye says there’s a direct line between McCarthy and President Trump through Roy Cohn, who served as the legal counsel to the subcommittee McCarthy chaired and later became Trump’s lawyer, when Trump started establishing his business in Manhattan.
