New Web Questionnaire
I am building a website for my client and I need input from users. I am polling the sales and purchasing force for what they want in the way of functionality. Any suggestions for what I should include on my questionnaire? I'm sort of new at this.

New Hmmm
Talk to the Customer Service group. Ask them what the most common "issues" are...especially those where customers require information to be sent post order.

If there are any tech data sheets, specifications...these are usually the things that get asked for the most.

Get the sales collateral from the sales guys. Get it transferred to pdf format and allow customers to pull that info themnselves.

Most importantly...you don't have to "invent" anything. Spend some time surfing...focus that surfing on competitive companies or companies in the same general business...see what they do and take what you like...pitch what you don't.

New Well...
I know I'm stating the obvious, but - use a checklist for requested functionality, with a radio-button 'importance, 0-5' modifier...

Oh - make sure to include a text-box where those polled can add suggestions of thier own. A nice twist might be to add those suggestions automatically to a 'suggested functionality' section of the poll, put that up with the same checkbox and 'importance' modifiers...

Just an idea...

New Shoot me an email
I have done many web forms for my former employer. I can help you pick a good, and easy to use form. True I've done mostly ASP and VBScript, but the design skills are still there.

Now if only I can find my green notebook, I drew up many ideas I had for web programs on it. Somehow I lost it, and I cannot find it. I wrote it in while taking those 30 minute Metrolink Train rides to and from work.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.
New I go back and forth on this issue.
Depending on how lazy I am on any given day. ;)

On the one hand, I have to honestly say I've never received any useful information from users by using questionnaires. The "best practice" I've settled on is to mock-up a few pages (often drawn from competitors' websites), then sit down one-on-one with selected users from each department involved, walk through the pages, get their ooh's and ugh's. In my experience users don't know jack until you think it up and show it to them. They have no concept of the Possible when it comes to interfaces or functionality, let alone the Reasonable.

On the other hand, I can be *really* lazy when I want to... :P

New knock up a couple of sample pages like elliot suggested
then flog them around the target crew. Be open to all silly suggestions.

New Another approach
Actually, one useful approach might be to observe/ask/question about what they *currently* do, how they do it, why they need to do it, and so forth. You can get into trouble a lot with a "This is how we've always done it" mentality(*), but it can also give you useful information about things they need on their web system.

(*) Been there, done that, "We run off X reports because we need then", "this is the accounting structure we need" (even though it's an old moldy pre-current government regulation structure they have to convert into reports they sent to the state government) and so forth.

Every 3-4 episodes they would finally attack each other and some stupid aerial melee would begin with missed attacks inevitably shattering backdrops while direct hits only propelled the enemy into backdrops for shattering.
