What are you making the drive on?

I'd strongly recommend spending the ten bucks or whatever to buy an 8GB thumb drive rather than use the usb hd that your backup is on.

Get the usb3 drive; it makes a huge difference in how fast that stuff happens; even if the current machine can't use it whenever you do get one that can it'll be a massive win.
Can you install Ubuntu from a USB hard drive, *not* thumb drive? - (drook) - (8)

Repartition with gparted, use Rufus or similar to write ISO -NT - (pwhysall)
Does the machine have a CD-ROM drive? - (scoenye)
         Absolutely. - (jake123) - (1)

Also, if all you have is a tiny thumb drive... - (pwhysall)

There is no test like production.
