One testing house tried various tapes for the job, and found the one thing duct tape is really lousy at is . . . wait for it . . . . . taping ducts. The other tapes tested were much better for that job.

Here in Southern California, if it's black, it's "grip tape" ("grips" are the guys setting up the camera equipment, the lighting, rail systems, running cables, etc.).
