New Found a solution...
..just in case someone else encounters the problem, thought I'd pass along the results of a solution. I guess I should have noted that the directory was created via ftp.

I found an ftp tool ([link|http://www.flashfxp.com/|FlashFXP] that allows you to give raw ftp commands. If you give the command:

MKD foo.bar / /

That will create the directory with a space character on the end. Correspondingly, the directory can be removed by issuing:

RMD foo.bar / /

Kind of stupid that Windows allows the creation of the directory via ftp, but says it's an invalid name when you try to rename or move the directory.

you could have written a program (in say C) that would have deleted the file.
