New "New viewer window" (in Mail, of course)
Right-on-schedule: amidst teh sturm und drang ... Apple Mail throws a tantrum.

Prequel: as may be the best clue of any 'causality':
It's an early 2009 IMac: 8 GB, SSD, El Capitan 10.11.6 ... otherwiseas bitchin-ly OK as comparo with previous Activity Mons.

1) Over some n-weeks.. [@ Appple] messages began appearing: demanding PW for Mail; when I dutifully sent same, red-reply was [forget wording: we don't LIke it]. Sleuthing then, a small hint came in trying various (old) PWs etc,, hint that $$$ was involved; I surmised that this was because: maybe my iCloud storage/or related ... needed $$-infusions ... from previous carrier when my iPhone was in use. So I nuked further sessions; W.T.F. they HAVE my e-mail addy and could have asked me, "What's Up Doc?"

2) Initially (while mail-View working.. natch) one of my addys-was-missing (the Large one) and Inet Accounts made (that source anyway) clear: typed in PW; it accepted. THENCE began the period of WIndow-lost

Have been down the Obvious list, starting with Magic-cure #1 (power-OFF, unplugged for 15 min+; reboot etc).
Thence to various wordings of [above title]. Most-all Google-found [??-their logic seems pretty fucking brain dead, given their 'answers' to so basic a query as this] ... material suffers from that vast mass of folk who Need an Editor before PEBKAC is invoked .. IF THIS THEN ELSE ..UNLESS ... machine-logic has its limits re any Info transfer-to-Humans.

KIlling mail, reloading while watching the events unfold in Activity Mon seems.. about right re 30K+ items in mail.
Doing ditto again via Finder reload of mail.app ... both Ways show ~same evidence that all==both Mail IS being reloaded.

∑ then: (some blinky response) indicates that clicking the NVW line is 'heard', things blink: no appearance below of 'new occupant' in Dashboard
One 'fix' tried/failed: remove Mail from D/board; reload mail, then open in Dashboard, then try-for-Viewer.

{{sigh}}
Ere I schlep the kit to local proven-Wizard Tim, shall proceed ... rephrasing-to the senescent-Google..
[like.. W.C.Fields /famous atheist caught reading the bible, "Just lookin' fer loopholes, Son, lookin fer loopholes..

Thanks for any tips ..if it WORKS ... I.O.U. a new Veyron, in any colour. (Post-demise, of course ..when the plot is liquidated) well, maybe..

New Sounds like corruption someplace
You mentioned 30k items on the laptop. I take it that is a POP3 setup?

Missing mail is usually due to the mailbox file becoming too large, index files getting out-of-sync, or outright filesystem corruption. The first two are on the application, the last one largely on the OS and underlying filesystem.

Rejected passwords are usually due to issues on the server side. Comcast does it to us every few months. But I'm not familiar enough with Apple Mail to rule out an interaction with other issues.

You can check for filesystem trouble with the Disk Utility or fsck from single user mode.

The link is an old-ish article on repairing mail file indexes. YMMV as it sounds like you may not even be able to get to the menu.
New Many Thanks
Al Punte again kiss-on cheek (Manly, of course)

Negotiating with local wizard re. doing a Remote or schlepping-in the kit, when he returns to his lair. Meanwhile shall peep your link. A little aid from Cthulhu + maybe some hints there and maybe even-moi might get lucky.

I plan to 'trade' The Tip (re something-fuzzy? via corrupted(?) Something in the Always-on module in main P.S.)
He seems to give a sorta $$-break when a one is ackshully on-same-page ..in this arcanery; Ego rulez amidst boffins, I wot. (Though that tip didn't cure this glitch.
New Zombies!! [rilly..] Power failure o'nite -->
(Thus: PS was also zeroed). Boot: the rest comes up operating: BUT
First screen seen: cluttered; first of (20+) was The Viewer WIndow(s), all frozen at 3-20.. First one was greyed-out, the rest normal-white: but inoperative (RYG dots uncolored, natch).

Thus: somewhere in the Twilight-zone of OS X-each clicky to see. if. it would lanch; happened, invisibly (as seemed the case at time, because of that glitch-response to the command)
Additionally in-grey resides the "Accounts" tab [@ logo] just after [General]. Perhaps the ∑ are the tells? re corrupted rebuilding symptoms; unclear if that is a DIY sequence for us amateurs, who know-not how to read the tea-leaves of various responses occurring along That procedure.

Stuffed Zombies in lower r.h.-corner near-off-screen, for the nonce. (Oddly) these can be positioned--but I no idea if there's an [also grey?] Zombie Apocalypse Eraser command; does anyone? Mayhap Zombie-behead.cmd?
But even zapping these: returns to status quo ante, a circle-jerk. Finally, One More Launch-try: {{sigh}} ...(ditto as previously).

At least the game is Interesting. Looks as if I still have to schlep the box on Tues. (T. would have acted yesterday--while 'full'--but: Webmail gave us both a reprieve. Can't complain: first actual melt-down from 1/09 20" through this 24" iMac; the Doze-years, Otoh.. ...

New Ugh.
If you still have some control, see if the Disk Utility can sort it out:
https://support.apple.com/guide/disk-utility/repair-a-storage-device-dskutl1040/mac

If not, you can try the fsck (file system check for Apple) command from single user mode:
https://www.applegazette.com/mac/repair-hard-disks-fsck-on-macos/

That article implies Apple is using some type of wrapper around the fsck command. It normally runs at the filesystem level (the numbered lines tagged Apple_HFS, etc. underneath each /dev/disk entry), not the disk level. That makes things a bit opaque as far as expected/standard behavior goes.
New S-mode..
and the wrapper contrived by OS X folk. Back when Linux appeared to be a viable escape-from [not 'New York City': the movie] recall playing with fsck a bit, (flush from having contrived a (simple) Unix coup which enabled some language students at U/Indiana to send Cyrrilic-text in their e-mails--this was beginners'-luck veritably--but it bloody-Worked. My friend's class-mates all wanted a copy; she was in Moscow and I sent a sample there. (I thought, on dropping-in to UI's IT center: w.t.f didn't these Pros take 5 mins (for them) and get them this fix wayback? ..believe I wasn't churlish, as in {sheesh!} But wanted to be.

'Discrettion being the better part of valor', I put self in place of any next investigator (always hoping to receive a cadaver which hasn't been 'helped along' by a neophyte). SInce the implications are: that OS X-fsck lacks the details of the Original, etc. I think it best to punt. I did run Disk Utility on the 20" periodically, mainly as a prophylactic (also hoping to grok a bit more of the prolific *Console messages [Greg F. RIP] advised, natch: ~"don't even Try"; MIss Greg. Still, I always believe that if you look around at the sophisticated tools before-Need, you get at least a sample of what messages look like ... when all is still AOK. (Sure works with er, particle accelerators).

* Ex: indeed found some relevant messages from a few days back, under the heading, 'asi' ~ [date I didn't know--the Zombies zoomed-in on "3-20-20"], making that association plausible; will pass that on. fwiw

Thanks for the links. Need an oscilloscope for anything? There's a Tektronix 323 teensy scope
[ http://w140.com/tekwiki/wiki/323 ] which worked fine on AC, but its aged (AA?) Nicads need upgrade to modrin NiMHs /easy peasy. Too much drain to work-now with present ones in place, even on AC. It's yours if you want :-) Probably a couple probes etc. It was amazing when launched, as it is Tek quality thus bulletproof--they built their own CRTs and much else. All gone now, but with discrete transistors in sockets! and new PS caps every couple decades ... it could out-Live the dis-US, y'know? :-þ

Cheers
New Only if you absolutely do not need it anymore
I have long been tempted to get a scope but never followed through as most of my work is on the software side of things.

I'll be glad to reimburse the shipping costs.
New Done.

(among shortest addys extant?)
PS: all these years: not knowing what the S stands for (!) ... 'Sherlock' could be fitting? :-þ

(I'm presuming that you can get all tech info from link), incl. (didn't check) some links to full manual w/schematics, surely Out There.
Else can see my collection/manuals--if there is a spare; I give it 99% that this will fire up with new batts ...
nothing much deteriorates in these; a few have gone through here.

Given the Times, this may be a while re delivery, natch.
New Sent
(And I even managed to find the manual, at the [appropriately|insultingly] named Boat Anchor Manuals Archive...)
