I never thought the old curse about interesting times would come true in such a tedious way. Granted, this tedium is occasionally enlivened by terror wrought by our misgovernance and outrage at the Republicans once more grifting off a national crisis, but that’s not the kind of enlivenment I like. It’s no substitute for drinks with friends, a night at the theater, or just the comfort of society humming along per usual. Even in wartime, America mostly has had that. The idea of a nation of hunkered-down households, culture-deprived and afraid of human contact — why, it sounds like suburbia!
