New Why, Microsoft, why???
I have a Lenovo laptop that I bought a few years ago for a job where the body shop was too cheap to provide company laptops. At set up I created the Admin login and password, and have never changed it. Pretty much used it only when travelling, except when we were living in the motel when Harvey flooded Houston. Once we got back into the house I put the desktop unit back to work, and the laptop got turned on only a few times in the past year.

Last Friday I was supposed to have a Skype interview with a body shop - PC turned on, accepted the login, no problem. Yesterday I fire it up: it won't accept the password. My first thought is a virus, but I can't do squat until I actually get onto it. In the message telling me that I've entered an incorrect password, it says to go to http://accounts.live.com/password/reset to change my password. Hey Microsoft, this is a LOCAL Userid and password combo for MY laptop; how I the fuck did you change it to sync with a Passport account?

I had no choice. Went to the URL, changed the password, rebooted the laptop, and entered my Admin userid and the new password. Accepted and allowed me to continue getting to the Windows Explorer window.

WHY, MICROSOFT, WHY??? What makes you think that you can just arbitrarily FORCE ME to change my laptop's local Admin password?

And they can't figure out why people keep dumping Windows and going to Linux.

New It wasn't a local account.
If they tell you to go online to reset the password, it wasn't a local account. The login screen won't tell you that if you have trouble with a local account.

When they first created this account sync for Windows 8, it was not straightforward to create a genuinely local account.

New laptop is Win 8.1

I would not worry too much, but just in case I'd monitor my socks and coat hangers for mysterious acts of spontaneous annihilation and replication.
