Re: just filled up with $1.66 per gallon gas
For various reasons, taxes among them, prices per gallon in the Bay Area tend to cluster around forty cents either side of $3.50, which of course is why the region is rapidly being depopulated as people flee to Fritters, Alabama, for surcease.

yeah it is pretty horrible here
looking to buy a horrible 2400sqft house for 149k, highest amount of govt tech jobs per capita right in the middle of the redneck riviera with beaches, 11 vegas style casinos casinos and fresh seafood year round. 80 miles from bourbon st. New Orleans for a change of pace. Fuckin horrible place for the snot sniffers.

We live in Northern California…
We live in coastal Northern California, notwithstanding the stratospheric costs, because the climate is clement, the culture congenial, the politics compatible, the cuisine cosmopolitan, the scenery incomparable. I have relatives in Fritters who imagine that California is a hellhole. I am happy to leave them with this impression intact.

A map helps..
From Berkeley hills one can see three major bridges and S.F.; the Golden Gate bridge and the Pacific are both in that scan. Oakland is adjacent S. of Berkeley so.. Yep, it's 'coastal'.

It still sounds weird to me that the SF Bay is "Northern California"
~ 300+ miles to the northern state line?!?
But since my neck of the woods is "Northern Virginia", it just goes to show that "Northern" is very relative.
:-)
Cheers, Scott.

Yes, but it's just "The North" . . .
. . and a quaint tourist destination.
Anything north of Sacramento is "The Frozen North". We don't go there.
