In practice, though, the speed really really doesn't matter
It's the pricing that gets me.
£750 for what is basically a mid-range 2015 phone with a screaming fast processor, but kneecapped in just about every other way?
Ridiculous.
I dislike this trend. Apple has huge influence and moves the market, and I'd rather they put out an actually-affordable phone to force the market in a better (i.e. more consumer-friendly) direction. Just moving the ASP upwards (of anything other than bargain basement Chinesium Android horrorphones) isn't right (although it's obviously sound business sense).
OTOH, it's already hard to see £800 worth of value difference between the Xr and the XS Max, so perhaps the price floor has got to stay high - comparing an Xr at £500 to the top-line Xs Max at £1500 might lead even the most dedicated Apple fan to go "Another thousand quid? really, Apple?"
OT: Apple's product naming for this generation is dumber than a box of rocks.

1) Completely agree on the naming
2) I just read an article about how Google is changing the value proposition with the Pixel line. Yes, they have top-end hardware specs, but three years of guaranteed (and fast) updates means your device *stays* cutting edge far longer.
And you can buy last year's model, or a used 2-year-old, and still have the latest software.

Heh
The gimped experience that is Stock Android isn't my idea of "cutting edge", but yeah, you're right, in principle. But then there's this bullshit that Google is pulling.

Google has long bean jealous of Apple's control.
And with regards to OS updates, I don't blame them. My Sony is still a good piece of hardware and it's only 4 years old. But Sony haven't released a newer OS for it than 5.1. :-/

Apple tried "cheap" once...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_5C It didn't go so well. Agreed that phone prices are kinda nuts. But they really are computers now and not "just" phones. Cutting-edge ones should be expensive, but diminishing returns are fast approaching. Within 5 years, I expect that 5G, good screens, day-long batteries are going to be common and then maybe there will be more competition on price. Maybe. I paid around $600 for my V30S and that seems like a fair price to me. Except for the fact that OS and security updates are slow to non-existent. Grrr... I didn't win the lottery last night, maybe tonight!! If so, maybe a Pixel 3 is in my future, or maybe not. Cheers, Scott.

Yep! Just used the Time Machine on my MacBook Pro. :)
But, at least the essential backup function is built into the OS and not a third party add on.

Re: In practice, though, the speed really really doesn't matter
As for the price you pay a monthly fee which for me is $50 a month and in 12 months I can trade it in for a new model or keep it for another 12 months and pay it off and it's mine Yes I know it's a lot of money but that seems to be the trend here all phones are going up We were just spoiled for paying $200 and again I've been very happy with my Apple phones and I like the way now I can upgrade every year without it costing me an arm and a leg
