Frankly, knowing neither you nor him all that well... *But* -- knowing what passes for "patriotic" in the USA nowadays (even before Sept. 11, 2001; but, of course, much much worse since then)... I'd be inclined to accept his take on it over yours.

But not every patriotic song is jingoistic. Knowing Peter Jennings, he's far more likely to view them with disfavor than many.
