New What services are running?
First guess is some service is not closing down gracefully and win therefore thinks it has had an abnormal shutdown.

New Re: Found it . it was DB2 causing it

I tried stopping all DB2 processes & setting them to manual start, but one task kept resurecting itself.

I recalled being suspicious of DB2 doing this some years back so took the step of deleting DB2 altogether & now I can get clean shutdowns & boot-ups.

I think it is to do with the options in DB2 that had been installed. The task causing the problem was somthing to do with logging a warehouse but I normally don't install datawarehouse related options.

Ahhh well - All I need do is reinstall DB2 but will use the workstation edition.
