It’s not my custom to watch open-ended episodic television series, but after catching online previews of “The Orville,” a Treklike sci-fi spoof, I tuned in last night, and while it was amusing, and with decent production values, I don’t see myself setting Sunday evenings aside for it. I have to single out one point for praise, however: in Act IV, during the climactic confrontation with the Bad Alien spaceship, our heroes prevail by means of a strategem that the writers have very meticulously laid the ground for. I mean, OK, the genre requires of us a willing suspension of disbelief, beginning with FTL travel, but given that, the setup was put together with a logical consistency and attention to detail that one doesn’t often see in popular entertainment.
