My view is that whatever consciousness is, our sense of it is manifested by the biochemical/electrical activity of the organ under our skulls. We owe our sentience to that activity. Once the activity ceases, it no longer exists. All the Medieval superstitious desert religions of the West have one thing in common: they are reactions to a fear of death. Being afraid of death is as silly a thing as the notion that one could have a sense of fear of the time prior to one's conception. All we will ever know about anything is simply the brain's computed value from the inputs it receives. Once that calculator is turned off, everything disappears - including the sense of self.

Put another way, asking about what happens "after death" is like asking where the light goes when you flip the light switch to the off position.

(Aside: what does "after death" really mean? Is not our sense of time also a function of the brain? With no brain function there can be no "time", hence, no notion of before or after. Our own death is the death of time.)
