New Wonderin' what y'all think...
I was cruising home from work last night and some nice DJ played this song... I'm beginning to think like him... Is this a problem?

SLOW TRAIN

Words and Music by Bob Dylan
1979 Special Rider Music

Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can't help but wonder what's happenin' to my companions,
Are they lost or are they found, have they counted the cost it'll take to bring down
All their earthly principles they're gonna have to abandon?
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

I had a woman down in Alabama,
She was a backwoods girl, but she sure was realistic,
She said, "Boy, without a doubt, have to quit your mess and straighten out,
You could die down here, be just another accident statistic."
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

All that foreign oil controlling American soil,
Look around you, it's just bound to make you embarrassed.
Sheiks walkin' around like kings, wearing fancy jewels and nose rings,
Deciding America's future from Amsterdam and to Paris
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Man's ego is inflated, his laws are outdated, they don't apply no more,
You can't rely no more to be standin' around waitin'
In the home of the brave, Jefferson turnin' over in his grave,
Fools glorifying themselves, trying to manipulate Satan
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Big-time negotiators, false healers and woman haters,
Masters of the bluff and masters of the proposition
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency,
All non-believers and men stealers talkin' in the name of religion
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

People starving and thirsting, grain elevators are bursting
Oh, you know it costs more to store the food than it do to give it.
They say lose your inhibitions, follow your own ambitions,
They talk about a life of brotherly love, show me someone who knows how to live it.
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Well, my baby went to Illinois with some bad-talkin' boy she could destroy
A real suicide case, but there was nothin' I could do to stop it,
I don't care about economy, I don't care about astronomy
But it sure do bother me to see my loved ones turning into puppets,
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Our bureaucracy and our laws have turned the world into a clean, safe work camp. We are raising a nation of slaves.

New Manichean Redux
At one point or another, I've owned every album from "Shot of Love" all the way back through to the original "Bob Dylan". I guess that means i made the man rich - "All I really want to do, is baby sell records to you".

As for Slow Train, I didn't really like that period music in his career. As in all Dylan songs, things are either good or their evil, right or wrong - which side are you on. Preachy, moralistic ditties, that tend to contradict both earlier and later works of the same artist.

Personally I prefer the stuff that Dylan's done in the last few years to his saved period. I gather that Dylan is not nearly so sure of his salvation these days, but is quite cognizant of his mortality and limitations.
New Gotta serve somebody...
as it turns out, it was Dylan's managers and agents for you and I both. I actually do like this particular album a great deal (beautiful song like "I believe in you...") and all.

My favorite is still The Times They Are A Chanin' (album)... I can't help it. Still love Spanish boots... I also love Blood on the Tracks and whichever one Tangled Up in Blue is on...

In any case, wasn't really going for the artist. I really never paid any attention to the lyrics of Slow Train Coming until last night and was blown away. Going for reaction to these particular lyrics...

New Re: Gotta serve somebody...
"Blue" is the first song on "Tracks". Single greatest Dylan song on that one, "Idiot Wind", a long song.

"Bob, what are you up to with these songs?"

"Oh, I think some of them are up to 10 or 11 minutes now."
New He's Funny
Some of the early stuff is laced with wicked wit - like "WW III Dream" and "Subterranean Homesick Blues". Actually both Dylan and Neil Young share the property of being at least interesting in their weaker efforts.
New Somewhere along the line...
...Dylan seems to have lost is sense of humor - at least when it comes to his music. Neil Young is as playful with his tunes as he's ever been.

If I had to pick my favs, it'd probably be Blood on the Tracks for Dylan and Tonight's the Night for Young. Both albums, though, qualify as morose since BOT is about divorce and TNT is about the death of a junky. Nothing like listening to true suffering when it's put down on vinyl. :-)
New Try not to take them too seriously.
He didn't, and they don't really hang together all That well. He entertains / we read into it what we want.

Sorry - ya gotta figure it all out yerself. Less'n ya wanna be one o' them puppet things.
