New It looks like the Trump deplorables are acting out.
More Bomb Threats Close Jewish Community Centers Across The Nation
Jewish Community Centers were shaken by another wave of bomb threats, forcing evacuations in nine states Monday.

Eleven Jewish Community Centers received threatening calls Monday, said Marla Cohen, communications manager for JCCA, the Jewish Community Center Association.

Incidents were reported at Jewish Community Centers in St. Paul, Minnesota; Buffalo and Amherst, New York; Birmingham, Alabama; Houston; Cleveland, Ohio; Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin; Nashville; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Tampa, Florida; and Chicago.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

-- Isaac Asimov
New Re: It looks like the Trump deplorables are acting out.
It's horrible.

Adam Silverman at Balloon-Juice:

I cannot emphasize enough just how bad this is. Not the property damage, in and of itself that’s bad, but because ground that has been the site of violence cannot be sanctified/re-sanctified. Provided that this is just cosmetic damage to the headstones – defacing, being knocked over, etc – there should be no problem. But if the graves themselves have been desecrated, then it will require reburials and the spaces will never be able to be reused as Judaism prohibits reusing a grave. This means that if someone has to be reburied in another plot, then the final resting place and marker/memorial will either be aware from the remainder of their relations graves or everyone will have to be relocated. This is not only traumatic for the living, but becomes prohibitively expensive to deal with.

:-(

Cheers,
Scott.

It's mourning in America again.
New That's what you get from that story?

New From this part, yes.
But if the graves themselves have been desecrated, then it will require reburials and the spaces will never be able to be reused as Judaism prohibits reusing a grave.

Somebody's imaginary friend determines which holes in the earth can be recycled and which cannot? That's not a stupid belief?

New I believe the phrase you’re looking for
…is “blame the victim.”

cordially,
New Not at all.
What these neo-fascists did is completely unacceptable and they should be rooted out and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Jesus, isn't that self-evident?

My comment was on the absurdity of a religious conviction and we'd all do well to ridicule *that* sort of nonsense whenever we encounter it. As Hitch said, "Treat religion with ridicule, hatred and contempt."

Mikem

It's mourning in America again.
New Sometimes it's the government determining it

[...]

Times have changed. Hong Kong’s modern gravestones are not expected to last “forever”; in fact, their average lifespan is about seven years in public cemeteries, which is the length of time that elapses before the grave is exhumed and the plot reused for another occupant.

[...]
New Isn't that different, though?
The former is based upon some superstition, the latter as a practical matter? (i.e. running out of space to house all the dead people)

New funny, this article expressly forbids removal of bodies

New Oh, this sounds weirdly familiar from box
Tickles a memory of a long-ago thread that ran along similar lines.

cordially,
New Not necessary to be Trumpites to blame Trump.
In it's blatant bigotry, the Trump administration has emboldened bigots of all stripes.
New fair enough
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New Also, pretty good bet that they did vote for Trump.
I haven't seen anything good on the cognitive dissonance for that segment when faced with his son-in-law, daughter, and grandchildren, however.
