We live across the street from my in-laws. We're over there helping out all the time. I've been over two or three times to help someone up after a fall. We've been trying for five years to convince them to sell both of our houses and get something we can all live in together. My mother-in-law is the holdout.
For the last couple of months my father-in-law Lou has been visiting neighbors on the next street every night. The husband, Bill, has had a couple of strokes and is on hospice care. Lou helps the wife get him into bed every night.
Tonight we were sitting down to dinner and I got a frantic call from Bill's wife. She said she thinks Bill is having a stroke and he's not responsive. Lou and I grabbed our coats and ran out.
We got Bill into bed, and he recognized us and was talking. We told the wife to call again if anything else happens.
When we got home, my wife told me that my mother-in-law said she's ready to move. Unprompted. I think she saw what it's like in our house every time we get a call for help.
