Lincoln isn't using it any more.
What's so wrong about renting out the Lincoln bedroom?

(OT) Re Lincoln: Ever heard the tune "The Girl I Left Behind Me"?
Here's the melody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTo9s87YIhM The English brought the tune over during the Revolutionary War apparently. During the War of Northern Aggression, the Yankees had their own lyrics and the Rebels did too. I'd heard the Southern version from family as a young boy and until ten years ago or so, I thought that was the only version. Here's the lyrics I learned: Old Abe is sick, Old Abe is sick, Old Abe is sick in the bed. He's a lyin' dog, A cryin' dog And I wish that he was dead. Jeff Davis is a gentleman, Abe Lincoln is a fool. Jeff Davis rides a big white horse, Abe Lincoln rides a mule. |

We're in Asheville. Nice place, but too much Confederate stuff, anti-government, etc. :-(

My daughter's favorite place. She went to UNCA.
West Asheville is where the California hippies of the 1960's retired. Okay, maybe that's a little much, but not very much. ;0) Perhaps no better place to see American Capitalist Excess is the Biltmore. Loads of craft beer around there. Some good music downtown, too. Cherokee is great. So's Chimney Rock. |

We plan to visit A again, but don't think we'd retire there.
There were lots of refugees from Hurricane Matthew, but even with that the traffic is bad. Lots of new buildings springing up without more roads or transit. Lots of homeless people. Biltmore was big, but a bit of a letdown after seeing palaces in Vienna, etc. Too many people on the selfguided toours. Still, it's a great argument for an inheritance tax. :-) We enjoyed our couple of nights at a B&B there. Huge crowds at the GSMNP too, but it's only an issue trying to park at the trailheads. The trees are just starting to turn. Very nice so far... Cheers, Scott. |

We've done parts. It is a very nice ride, indeed. Lots of traffic at times though.

It was *way* better before the 240 was built.
The only way into Asheville "back in the day" was via Tunnel Road. Traveling on I-40 you could pass by Asheville and never know it was there. No part of the city was visible from I-40. You drove through the tunnel and when you came out, a city suddenly appeared. The first time it was quite a shock. Back in the 1980's, I spent a lot of time at what is now Pack's Tavern, just below the courthouse. Back then it was Bill Stanley's BBQ and that was the very best barbecue I've ever eaten. Plus, six nights a week they had the "Marc Pruett Band" performing live. (Pruett's the banjo picker for Balsam Range and is fantastic! http://www.balsamrange.com) Asheville's a lot different these days, but I have a lot of very good memories of my mispent youth there. ;0) |
