A friend's father, many, many years ago . . .
. . sent away for a "Sure Fire Roach Killer - Guaranteed", in response to an advertisement in the back of Reader's Digest, or some such.
Indeed, it was True! It consisted of two wooden blocks. One had an "X" painted on it. The instruction was to "Place your roach on the X on block-1. Strike it firmly with Block-2".
Of course this was the same guy who had some dude come around trying to sell him stock in some fly-by-night new company. He knew better. Instead, he invested his money in an Onyx mine. He got a nice Onyx coffee table out of that, but nothing else. The company he turned down was called "Polaroid".
