Interesting. I'm sure there are good arguments on the other side though.
Based on her argument (at least as I understand it) St. John McCain would not have been eligible either (he was born in the Canal Zone). There were rumblings about it, but nobody took the criticisms very seriously. There was a Resolution about it for McCain, but presumably that would have little weight if the SCOTUS decided to address the issue. FWIW. Cheers, Scott.

But, the Canal Zone was under US jurisdiction at the time..
Jimmy Carter agreed to transfer the Canal Zone to Panama in 1977. Actual transfer was on December 31, 1999.
Still, US jurisdiction (and even US military base) and US proper could be argued to be different.
Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona before it was state and just a territory. It was mentioned as an issue at the time.

About that military base thingy
Didn't SCOTUS decide those are foreign soil outright? Something about being able to keep detainees indefinitely without trial and not run afoul of the USC?

That's yet another a whole can of worms...
Now you start getting into explicit distinctions and exclusion written into the Constitution and how those interact with developments which came much later. Even with that, I don't think there is any doubt the reservations are US dominions.

the equivelent of states sorta
leaves a gaping hole for law enforcement. State cops cant go there. Tribal cops have to hand felonies over to feds who mostly don't give a shit. Ugly nightmare

Panama Canal Zone was more than a military base.
From Wikipedia: The Panama Canal Zone (Spanish: Zona del Canal de Panamá) was an unorganized territory of the United States from 1903 to 1979, centered on the Panama Canal in the Republic of Panama. I don't know what SCOTUS ruled. but administrations and the military acted as if they were not on US territory. During WW-II all mail between US and Europe went through Bermuda where "censors" read it in violation of the 4th Amendment of the Constitution.
