While buying a couple things as Super King Market today, I checked out their herb shelf, which I always do, because I've found things there I've found nowhere else.
Today I spotted Hoja Santa (Piper auritum), an herb I've never been able to sample or photograph, though it's very popular in Oaxaca, Mexico and Central America.
It cost US $1.45 for 2 leaves, a total of 3/8 ounce. That comes to $61.87 / pound. Somebody should get on the stick and start growing it here in Southern California.
It's a member of the Pepper family (black Pepper, not Chili Pepper), and it tastes a lot like root beer.
